The diamond is placed under UV light and the reaction of the diamond to the light is monitored. Most diamonds emit a blue glow, but not all. Some diamonds do not glow under UV light. Therefore, if the stone does not shine, it is not a very healthy result to say that your diamond is definitely fake. Since this test is imprecise, it is most logical for a diamond expert or jeweler to use their advanced equipment to test the stone.

Many diamonds available in the market will emit blue fluorescence light when examined under different lights. Although the degrees are different, having this blue light can give you an idea about the reality of the diamond. On the other hand, let’s say you have examined your diamond and did not come across any blue light. This does not mean that your diamond is 100% fake. Because some diamonds may not glow under UV light and reflect blue light. If it reflects green, yellow, or gray instead of blue light under UV light, this could also mean that your stone is moissanite.

While a UV test can help narrow your options, you should avoid relying 100% on the results of this test as precise indicators of whether a diamond is genuine. Some diamonds are fluorescently transparent under UV light, others are not. It is also possible to overlay fake diamonds on the market to shine under UV light.

What Is Fluorescence?

Fluorescence is the color response of money under UV light that allows us to understand whether the money used to be fake or not. Some diamonds that have this mechanism also release energy when excited by UV light and scientifically this energy is called photoluminescence or cold radiation. Diamonds are classified according to the light intensity emitted by UV light.

Fluorescence in diamonds is simply the effect of ultraviolet (UV) light on the diamond. When you hold the diamond to blue or ultraviolet light, you may find that your white shirt becomes brighter or your teeth glow. Fluorescence is this visible light a diamond emits when exposed to UV rays.

Having fluorescence is common in diamonds. Some fluorescence has been found in approximately 25% to 35% of diamonds tested in the last decade. However, only 10% of these diamonds tested are capable of affecting the appearance. This ratio is determined in laboratories and is classified as medium, strong, and very strong.

Diamonds that are said to have fluorescence contain particles that emit visible light when exposed to UV light. This light is usually blue in color. In rare cases, high fluorescence levels can cause stones to appear hazy. In addition, most of the time, fluorescence does not affect the beauty or the radiance of the diamond in general. It can even make the colors at lower levels in the color scale more visible.

Fluorescence appears as a blue color in almost all diamonds. If a stone with the yellow color of I, J, K, L, M values has fluorescence, it looks much more colorless and white than other diamonds. This is because the blue and yellow colors are complementary to each other on the color scale.

Some diamonds that contain fluorescence can also emit colors in yellow, green, pink, or white tones, unlike blue. This is related to the ratio of some minerals in the mineral structure of diamonds. Especially the effect of the amount of boron and nitrogen in the mineral structure is much more.

Having fluorescence also has different effects on the appearance of a diamond. Studies have shown that although it has an effect on the diamond, it is not at a level that can be seen by the eye. Neither the effect of fluorescence nor the amount of fluorescence they have is discernible.

In the studies, the experts preferred to examine the diamonds that they generally classified as medium or strong. Although very rare among these diamonds, they found that diamonds with an extremely strong fluorescence ratio are not shiny and have a hazy appearance.

The presence of fluorescence in its structure does not pose any danger to the structural integrity of the diamond. A fluorescence diamond and any stone that does not react to UV light are the same sizes in size.

Buying a fluorescence diamond is also a purely personal choice. Because diamond should be handled as a whole with both its structure and appearance and choice should be made in this direction in diamond shopping. Some factors to be considered in this process can be how the diamond is cut, how the diamond looks in natural light, how the diamond looks in artificial light, and even what clothes you are wearing that day. These factors can affect the appearance of a diamond more than whether or not the diamond has fluorescence.

Since the fluorescence found in diamonds causes the diamond to emit blue light, it can make your diamond look whiter and brighter. For this reason, the prices of diamonds with very strong fluorescence rates increase at that rate.

Other Methods to Find Out If a Diamond Is Fake

There is always one rule in mind for those who want to buy diamonds for the first time. However, sometimes the signs are not that obvious and you can easily be fooled.

When buyers want to buy diamonds, it is very likely that they will encounter the imitation of the diamond they want and this situation can only be distinguished in the laboratory. If you are questioning whether the diamond is real or not, it is highly recommended that you shop from a reputable and reliable diamond brand. In addition, you may want to try some simple ways in which you can test whether a diamond is real or fake with your own methods.

1 – Mist Test: Place the stone you think is a diamond in front of your mouth and breathe out as if blowing into a mirror. If the diamond remains cloudy for a few seconds, this is an indication that your diamond is probably fake. Because a real diamond does not fog up easily.

2 – Water Test: Start the test by taking a glass in your hand and filling it with any water. Drop the diamond you want to test into this glass. If your diamond has stayed in the upper or middle of the glass, you may think that your diamond is fake. Because of its high-density ratio, when you throw a diamond into the water, it should not sink in water.

3 – Examining with a Magnifying Glass: Hold your magnifier from above and look at the diamond you want to examine. Look for natural imperfections in your diamond. Because real diamonds are naturally occurring, they contain many imperfections. On the other hand, if your diamond has no flaws or defects, the diamond you have is likely to be fake.

4 – Transparency Test: Start this test by taking a piece of newspaper or a magazine page in your hand. Place this piece of paper on your diamond. If you see the words on the page blurry, we can say that the diamond you have is real. On the other hand, if you can read the words on the page clearly, this means that your diamond may be fake.

5- Point Test: A piece of white paper is placed on a flat surface and a small dot is drawn on it with a pencil. The diamond is placed on the paper with the flat side down. You can look at the paper with the pointed end of the diamond. If a circular reflection is seen in the stone, we can call it a fake diamond. If you can’t see the point or the reflection in the stone, then we can say that the diamond is real. Because a real diamond has strong refractive qualities, the light it reflects will stretch in different directions rather than in a straight line. Therefore, it is not possible to see letters or points with a natural and real diamond.

6- UV Light Test: Although it is not an easy test to be applied at home, if you have a strong UV light at hand, you can try this test with peace of mind. Many real diamonds will appear blue under UV light. This test does not provide as much reliability as other home tests. Therefore, taking your diamond to a professional jeweler will give you a clearer result.
